We will be fostering and promoting green initiatives, projects, products , and services of businesses and organizations in our region, at this event and others throughout the rest of the year. Since 2008 our Monday Nite green events have been very well received . We've already partnered with Utica Monday Nite again this summer and look forward to partnering with other companies and organizations in the future. Please contact Richard Morris (event organizer) at 724-6364 or envexpo@dreamscape.com to get involved and for further information about up coming events.
6/27 : Earthquakes & Nuclear Power Plant Safety in New York State This presentation will take place in the Upstairs Gallery at the Utica Public Library, 303 Genesee St.. Two Utica College Geology professors will tell the how, what, where, and why of earthquakes. Learn about the different causes of earthquakes and the damage they create.
Professors Herman Muskatt and Adam Shoonmaker will also discuss the vulnerability of nuclear power plants in New York State to earthquakes . Special focus will be on those just upwind of our area. The public will have an opportunity after the presentation to ask questions and to voice their opinions.
Background:
Earthquakes commonly occur around the world, especially along tectonic plate boundaries. The Pacific Ocean is almost entirely bounded by active plate boundaries and experiences relatively high numbers of earthquakes, many of which are severe. Coastal regions around the Pacific are also at risk for damaging earthquake generated tsunamis, ( such as the earthquake and tsunami that recently struck Japan). New York State, in contrast, is located in a plate interior and so experiences far less earthquake activity. Severe earthquakes are rare. However, earthquakes are not unknown in New York State and some are capable of damaging societal infrastructure. Importantly, the presence of nuclear reactors (e.g. Indian Point, Oswego) in proximity to large populations centers require an understanding of possible earthquake activity and an assessment of the potential shaking that can occur.
Speakers:
1) Dr. Herman Muskatt
Professor Emeritus of Geosciences , Utica College
Dr. Muskatt obtained his Ph.D. at Syracuse college in 1969. He specializes in sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, environmental geology, alternative energy resources, and oceanography.

2) Dr. Adam Schoonmaker
Assistant Professor of Geosciences, Utica College
Dr. Adam Schoonmaker is a native of central New York and received his B.A. from Potsdam College, an M.Sc. from the University of Vermont, and his Ph.D. from the University of Albany.
